When Kathy Bauck took the stand in her own defense in a trial on March 20, 2009, she told the jury something they likely were not expecting to hear. First, she acknowledged that she had been "told" she could no longer perform veterinary procedures on animals in her kennel.
She was referring to a well-publicized cease and desist order that came from the Minnesota Board of Veterinary Medicine. The order outlined several veterinary procedures Bauck had been illegally performing on her animals. These procedures included, among other things, surgical procedures during which inadequate anesthetic was used, ear cropping and tail docking on dogs, and other activities associated with the practice of veterinary medicine. The order states:
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY ORDERED, pursuant to Minn. Stat. 156.15, that Respondent shall cease and desist from:
a. Performing any surgical procedure on any puppy or dog owned by Respondent or by another, including, but not limited to, spay surgery, neuter surgery, Cesarian sections, hernia repairs, ear crops, tail docks and dew claw removals;
Bauck, responding to a question from her own defense council, told the court that since she was no longer allowed to perform tail docking and ear cropping, the procedures are now done by her husband, Allan Bauck. Allan Bauck is also not a veterinarian.
Another startling revelation made by Bauck at the trial was that the veterinary protocol used at her "Pick of the Litter" dog kennel was written by she and her husband and not a veterinarian. | | Related Links:
