Today, multiple news stories broke relating to the killing of 130 cats previously "rescued" by the Animal Humane Society from a mobile home in St. Anthony, Minnesota. Each of the stories told a different version of who offered what services to AHS and when they offered them.

    The
Star Tribune, quoted J. Dixon, President of Animal Humane Society as saying the following:

Dixon acknowledged that the Humane Society received three offers of help for the St. Anthony cats, but they were received after euthanization was complete.

Esme Murphy from WCCO quoted a Humane Society representative as saying they had received a voicemail on Friday offering help.

With a whole other slant on the saga, Jennifer Griswold talked to the director at a no kill sanctuary, Home for Life, who, in addition to Animal Ark, offered to provide care and housing for the felines.

Animal Ark's records tell a more complete story. Phone calls from Animal Ark to Animal Humane Society began on February 12, the day the story of the cats broke. After no calls were returned, multiple staff members at Animal Ark began emailing staff at Animal Humane Society on February 12. The first response to one of these emails came on the afternoon of February 12, when members of the media were still photographing and video taping live cats at the Animal Humane Society.

Animal Ark cannot confirm who reads their emails when at Animal Humane Society, or who picks up their voicemail. However, it is clear that AHS staffers were well aware of our offers to help while all of the cats were still alive.

If you are a contributor, you can make the most difference by finding another place for your money and letting the treasurer or other BOD members know why you are doing this. It is what I am doing. Otherwise, we are too easy to ignore on the premise that we have short memories and this will blow over.

My mother alerted Best Friends in Utah to the situation and they emailed her back to say that they had contacted the GVHS via email with an offer to help.

I e-mailed the AHS about the cats asking to get some of the kittens before they put them down, that was on the 12th. On the 13th first thing in the morning I called and left a message. I received a call back early evening that the cats were still being assessed and they received many calls, but could only go to a 501C3 organization. I told her my friend and I had a lot of experience with ringworm and respiratory problems in cats, and so-called feral cats and said fine I would contact HMAS to get their permission. Before I got back to them I heard they were all put down. My comment to her was that they could always be euthanized, but once done that was it..........

I had a check made out to the Animal Humane Society in a stamped, addressed envelope when I heard the news about the senseless killing of the "rescued" cats. I ripped it up and sent checks to Lisa at Home For Life and to Animal Ark in Hastings instead.

Janelle Dixon spends too much time back-pedalling and and saying "but" to think about the consequences of her actions. Kathie Johnson obviously told lies directly to the camera. I'm so saddened to think that this probably happens even far more often than the media even knows about. We all understand that with that large number of cats, there would be illnesses. I am upset about the lying to the public and unwillingness to respond to the outpouring of support. The AHS board needs to start being proactive instead of reactive to this type of behavior.

Janelle and the Humane Society strikes again. If I were an animal that's the last group of people I would want to be "rescued" by. I can't believe that I spent almost 6 years working for those people.

Does anyone know how to contact the Board of Directors for the AHS? Can you list thier email addresses? I also called on Friday and talked to someone who said they were going to evaulate the cats for 2-3 weeks. The group I foster for was interested in helping and I explained that. They told me that our group would have to fill out some paperwork and I thought fine we have two weeks to get that done. I am pissed off beyonds words that they did this mass murder. I want to do all I can to make sure this never happens again and to get Ms. Dixon out of her position of power. She is a cruel and hateful person and should NOT be there...

On 02/17/2009 Charlotte said: Tell it to the AHS Board of Directors

Janelle Dixon clearly doesn't care much about public opinion - so people need to start making their opinions known to AHS board members who can control the hiring and firing and ultimately control the pursestrings.

That's how the AHS gas chamber was stopped. Allen Stensrud, the director at the time, didn't care what anyone said, but when the board members at the time started getting phone calls and emails things changed rather quickly.

Here's the current list of AHS board members besides Dixon: Murphy McKee –Chair, Nic Pifer – Vice Chair, Walt McCarthy – Secretary, Jeff Ament – Treasurer, Ed Clausman, DVM, Barb Colombo, Kerry D’Amato, Lisa Goodman, Dean Hedstrom, Don Jacobsen, Sheila Kennedy, James Lane, Linda Lee, Teresa Morrow, Deborah Patterson, Dr. Ned Patterson, DVM, Wayne Popham, Boyd Ratchye, Damon Schramm, Kristi Skordahl, Carolyn Smith, Stephanie Swanson, Dr. Robert Washabau, DVM, Lia Melrose, Emilie Buchwald, and Cyndi Lesher.

The public needs to let the AHS board members know that AHS is an embarrassment to this community with its anachronistic policies and refusal to even consider a different way of doing things other than killing almost 50% of the animals who come through their doors every year. And now you can add straight out misleading and lying to the public, their donor base, to the list.

I just watched Channel 5's lead story revealing that they had uncovered that AHS had misrepresented what had really transpired with these cats. The reality is that they started killing them almost immediately upon bringing them into the shelter. Kathie Johnson with AHS had said in the initial news report that the AHS had NOT yet evaluated them and that they would be allowed to settle down for a couple of days and then be evaluated. That did not happen. This certainly leads me to believe that these cats were not really evaluated AT ALL despite reports to the contrary. In other words, everything that the AHS has stated about medical and behavior issues is based on what exactly?? Oddly enough, the AHS could not be reached for comment (per the report...)

I struggle with finding words to express my anger and disgust with this revelation... This is nothing more than a mass cat slaughter.

some of us will be at the Humane Society in Golden Valley at 10 am on Wednesday, when they open for animal rescues, to do some peaceful protesting with some signs. We are just so upset about this. Whether or not they knew about the offers of help, they shouldn't have euthanized those cats so quickly. If they had needed extra facilities or lost cost vet service, someone, Animal Ark, Cause 4 Paws, Best Friends would have offered assistance, especially since this is such a strongly precidented situation. So if you feel like we feel, definitely come out and join us.

On 02/16/2009 Julia said: I would have helped

I would of taken one or two of those poor kitties and would have assumed responsibility for their care. I emailed the humane society about it on Feb 13th, and never even got a reply back. It makes me so sad. Yes, they are only cats, and kittens, but their lives are still inherently valuable...their lives are as prescious to them as yours is to you. Its such a shame they would not let people help those poor little souls.

Wow... quite revealing when you look at the sequence of events.

I agree with Feline F...where do we need to go from here? It's time for us to be heard knowing that it does not need to be this way as evidenced by others in the country that have made a difference and reduced the killing of our homeless pets.

On 02/16/2009 Feline F said: Now What Mike

Now what do you want us to do Mike?? You know this one can not get pushed under the rug. Are you planning a "media" cast of your own? The facts can not hide. The GVHS thinks they are untouchable. We know any person or group of people can be touched. We are behind the people who truly care about what is "right" for the animals. Lets show all the people the true facts about what really happened this time.
