As I sat down to write this letter, I was reminded of recent events that have shown both how far the animal welfare community in Minnesota has come, and also how far we still have to go. Recent news that a local humane society unnecessarily killed 130 cats they had “rescued” highlighted one of the greatest challenges that no kill supporters face: large, entrenched and well-funded bureaucracies disguised as animal welfare organizations.
The good news: animal welfare advocates from around the country came forward to oppose the needless killing of these felines. Ten years ago, the deaths of these kitties would have probably gone unnoticed. Today, however, animal advocates understand that diseases like upper respiratory infections and ringworm (the excuses used to justify these killings) are not serious and are treatable. They came forward in numbers and with a loud voice to demand change. Our no kill revolution is gaining momentum. Change is clearly coming, thanks to the support of our members, volunteers and donors who are working to make it happen. You can help.
Below, you will find just a few of the success stories from Animal Ark, Minnesota’s largest no kill animal welfare organization, where we believe animals with treatable medical or behavior issues should be provided care and training. At Animal Ark, we believe animals are worthy of our care and that their lives have intrisic meaning and value.
Please read their stories, and, if you agree, make a donation today. In these tough economic times, your donation is more urgently needed than ever before.
Unlike large, multimillion dollar shelters, 71% of our modest budget goes to daily animal care, 11.5% to veterinary care (for a total of 82.5% spent on direct animal care), 12.5% to management and only 5% to fund-raising. Your generous donation will go where you want it to - directly to help the homeless animals.
We can only make a difference if you choose to help us. Homeless companion animals cannot survive without caring people like you. Thank you in advance for your generous support!
Wishing your family a wonderful spring and summer,
Mike Fry, Executive Director
