January, 2006 - Animal Ark in Hastings Minnesota is officially announcing the launch of a new program designed to Put A Stop to Puppy Mills, that are currently flourishing in the state.
"After visiting a puppy mill my first time, I knew we had to do something about growth of this industry in Minnesota," said Mike Fry, Executive Director of Animal Ark. "People don't see these animals, they don't see the suffering, and so puppy mills operate without many restrictions."
So Animal Ark plans to call attention to the plight of these animals. Their new program "Put A Stop To Puppy Mills" intends make puppy mill animals visible to the public. In cooperation with the Companion Animal Protection Society, an organization that has been investigating puppy mills in Minnesota since the 1990's, Animal Ark plans to rent billboard space, and place advertisements in area publications showing photos of our areas mills.
"We are still working on some of the details," said Fry, "but we are not ruling out the possibility of publishing the names and addresses of Minnesota's USDA licensed, "commercial breeders" (aka, puppy mills).
In addition to bringing about more public awareness of this problem, Animal Ark also intends to make funds available to help fight legal challenges to mill operator's licenses and permits. Animal Ark plans to engage the services of Marshall Tanick of Mansfield Tanick and Cohen, one of the nation's leading authorities on animal law, to help fight the legal issues.
